Description

A bold and flavorful twist on the classic sloppy joe — these Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes feature tender ground chicken simmered in a zesty, spicy Cajun sauce, served on toasted buns for a deliciously messy and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 sandwich buns or brioche rolls
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for toasting buns
  • Fresh parsley or green onions, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground chicken and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until no longer pink.
  2. Add diced onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and flavors blend.
  6. Meanwhile, butter the buns and toast them on a skillet or under the broiler until golden brown.
  7. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto toasted buns and garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.
  8. Serve hot with a side of fries, chips, or coleslaw.

Notes

  • Adjust Cajun seasoning to your spice preference — add more for extra heat.
  • Try topping with melted cheese or a spoonful of coleslaw for extra flavor.
  • Use ground turkey or beef as an alternative protein.
  • Leftover filling can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
