Description
Mozzarella Chicken in Basil Cream Sauce is a rich and flavorful dish featuring tender chicken breasts smothered in a creamy garlic-basil sauce and topped with melted mozzarella — perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ cup chicken broth
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup chopped fresh basil (plus extra for garnish)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
- Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder on both sides.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear chicken for 4–5 minutes per side until golden and cooked through (internal temperature 165°F / 74°C). Remove from pan and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add butter and minced garlic. Sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in chicken broth and scrape up any browned bits from the pan. Stir in heavy cream and red pepper flakes.
- Simmer for 3–4 minutes, then stir in mozzarella, Parmesan, and fresh basil until melted and smooth. If sauce is too thin, add the cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened.
- Return chicken to the skillet, spooning the sauce over the top. Simmer for another 2–3 minutes to heat through.
- Garnish with additional basil and serve warm over pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes.
Notes
- Use freshly grated mozzarella for a smoother, creamier sauce.
- For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with roasted vegetables or a side of garlic bread.
