Description

A Southern favorite with a twist — these South Carolina Bird Dog Sandwiches feature crispy fried chicken tenders, melted cheese, bacon, and tangy honey mustard, all nestled inside a soft hot dog bun. Sweet, salty, creamy, and absolutely irresistible!

Ingredients

  • 4 hot dog buns (split-top or brioche-style preferred)
  • 4 crispy chicken tenders (homemade or frozen and baked)
  • 4 slices cooked bacon, cut in half
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup shredded lettuce
  • For the Honey Mustard Sauce:
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, lemon juice, paprika, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Chicken: If using frozen chicken tenders, bake or air fry according to package instructions until crispy and golden. For homemade, fry or bake breaded chicken strips until cooked through and crisp.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Warm or lightly toast the hot dog buns. Place a slice of cheese inside each bun and allow it to slightly melt from the warmth of the bun or chicken.
  4. Add a crispy chicken tender to each bun, followed by two half-slices of bacon.
  5. Drizzle generously with honey mustard sauce, then top with shredded lettuce.
  6. Serve immediately while warm and melty.

Notes

  • For an extra kick, add pickled jalapeños or use spicy honey mustard.
  • Swap the bacon for turkey bacon or omit for a lighter version.
  • These sandwiches pair perfectly with waffle fries, onion rings, or coleslaw.
  • Make mini versions using slider buns for parties or game day.
